CHAPTER 21
Meet me at the farm around four today.
Emerson re-read the text message she received from Drake this morning. Sitting down on her bed, she grabbed the pillow next to her and hugged it against her body as she fell backward. She closed her eyes and remembered his kiss. How he lingered, skimming his lips against hers before pulling her to him. She burned inside when she thought of him.
âStop it, Emerson.â She pressed her lips together.
Becoming involved with Drake was the last thing she should do, but her body told her something different from her mind. Her plans didnât include falling for a cowboy. Settling the estate was her plan, then moving back to California where she could forget and start again. Fate played its hand, and she couldnât leave, knowing Chrissy might be out there.
Sheâd abandoned both Emerson and their parents. Why couldnât she leave Chrissy? Emerson was clueless. She needed to have answers to the questions sheâd been asking all her life. Why did Chrissy leave? What made her disappear from their lives? Had she left by choice? And if so, what was so horrible about living with her family? If or when she found her, would Chrissy answer those questions?
While sheâd spent the day going through cupboards, sorting items to be donated and items to be sold, these were the thoughts going through her head.
Now, sitting up on the bed, she stared into her closet. She needed to decide what she would wear to meet Drake at the Miller ranch. A pair of jeans and one of her favorite t-shirts with her favorite pair of slip-on sneakers would do. She would be comfortable.
Emerson glanced at the time on her cell, realizing it was almost time to leave. Jumping up from the bed, she quickly changed. Slipping her feet into her sneakers, she picked up her bag from the bed and dropped in her cell phone. She walked into the bathroom to check her makeup and brush her teeth. She brushed her hair, pulled it back, and applied a little lip gloss. One last glance in the mirror and she needed to leave, or she would be late.
Drake waiting for her, sitting on the lowered tailgate of his truck, when Emerson pulled into the driveway of the Miller ranch. Her tree was in the back. As she drove closer and turned off her car, he jumped down and walked toward her. He helped her out of her car, closed the door, then pulled her close and kissed her before she could say anything.
âHello to you too.â She took a breath to replace the one he had taken away. His scent was intoxicating. His arms around her felt wonderful. She knew she was in trouble.
âThanks for meeting me.â Drake smiled.
âWhy is my tree in the back of your truck?â She pointed toward the tree.
Drake took her hand and walked toward the truck. âFollow me.â He opened the passenger door for her, then ran around to the driverâs side and climbed in.
